Kernel Fisher Discriminant Analysis Based on a Regularized Method for Multiclassification and Application in Lithological Identification
This study aimed to construct a kernel Fisher discriminant analysis (KFDA) method from well logs for lithology identification purposes. KFDA, via the use of a kernel trick, greatly improves the multiclassification accuracy compared with Fisher discriminant analysis (FDA). The optimal kernel Fisher projection of KFDA can be expressed as a generalized characteristic equation. However, it is difficult to solve the characteristic equation; therefore, a regularized method is used for it. In the absence of a method to determine the value of the regularized parameter, it is often determined based on expert human experience or is specified by tests. In this paper, it is proposed to use an improved KFDA (IKFDA) to obtain the optimal regularized parameter by means of a numerical method. The approach exploits the optimal regularized parameter selection ability of KFDA to obtain improved classification results. The method is simple and not computationally complex. The IKFDA was applied to the Iris data sets for training and testing purposes and subsequently to lithology data sets. The experimental results illustrated that it is possible to successfully separate data that is nonlinearly separable, thereby confirming that the method is effective
A repeating fast radio burst associated with a persistent radio source
The dispersive sweep of fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been used to probe the ionized baryon content of the intergalactic medium1, which is assumed to dominate the total extragalactic dispersion. Although the host-galaxy contributions to the dispersion measure appear to be small for most FRBs2, in at least one case there is evidence for an extreme magneto-ionic local environment3,4 and a compact persistent radio source5. Here we report the detection and localization of the repeating FRB 20190520B, which is co-located with a compact, persistent radio source and associated with a dwarf host galaxy of high specific-star-formation rate at a redshift of 0.241 ± 0.001. The estimated host-galaxy dispersion measure of approximately 903−111+72 parsecs per cubic centimetre, which is nearly an order of magnitude higher than the average of FRB host galaxies2,6, far exceeds the dispersion-measure contribution of the intergalactic medium. Caution is thus warranted in inferring redshifts for FRBs without accurate host-galaxy identifications
Advancements in the Use of Bacteriophages to Combat the Kiwifruit Canker Phytopathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae
Over the last several decades, kiwifruit production has been severely damaged by the bacterial plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), resulting in severe economic losses worldwide. Currently, copper bactericides and antibiotics are the main tools used to control this bacterial disease. However, their use is becoming increasingly ineffective due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance. In addition, environmental issues and the changes in the composition of soil bacterial communities are also concerning when using these substances. Although biocontrol methods have shown promising antibacterial effects on Psa infection under in vitro conditions, the efficiency of antagonistic bacteria and fungi when deployed under field conditions remains unclear. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a phage-based biocontrol strategy for this bacterial pathogen. Due to the specificity of the target bacteria and for the benefit of the environment, bacteriophages (phages) have been widely regarded as promising biological agents to control plant, animal, and human bacterial diseases. An increasing number of studies focus on the use of phages for the control of plant diseases, including the kiwifruit bacterial canker. In this review, we first introduce the characteristics of the Psa-induced kiwifruit canker, followed by a description of the diversity and virulence of Psa strains. The main focus of the review is the description of recent advances in the isolation of Psa phages and their characterization, including morphology, host range, lytic activity, genome characterization, and lysis mechanism, but we also describe the biocontrol strategies together with potential challenges introduced by abiotic factors, such as high temperature, extreme pH, and UV irradiation in kiwifruit orchards. The information presented in this review highlights the potential role of phages in controlling Psa infection to ensure plant protection
Soy Isoflavones Regulate Lipid Metabolism through an AKT/mTORC1 Pathway in Diet-Induced Obesity (DIO) Male Rats
The pandemic tendency of obesity and its strong association with serious co-morbidities have elicited interest in the underlying mechanisms of these pathologies. Lipid homeostasis, closely involved in obesity, has been reported to be regulated by multiple pathways. mTORC1 is emerging as a critical regulator of lipid metabolism. Here, we describe that the consumption of soy isoflavones, with a structural similarity to that of estradiol, could mitigate obesity through an AKT/mTORC1 pathway. Fed with soy isoflavones, the diet-induced obesity (DIO) male rats exhibited decreased body weight, accompanied with suppressed lipogenesis and adipogenesis, as well as enhanced lipolysis and β‑oxidation. The phosphorylation of AKT and S6 were decreased after soy isoflavone treatment in vivo and in vitro, suggesting an inhibition effect of soy isoflavones on mTORC1 activity. Our study reveals a potential mechanism of soy isoflavones regulating lipid homeostasis, which will be important for obesity treatment
Pseudomonas bijieensis Strain XL17 within the P. corrugata Subgroup Producing 2,4-Diacetylphloroglucinol and Lipopeptides Controls Bacterial Canker and Gray Mold Pathogens of Kiwifruit
Kiwifruit worldwide suffers from the devastating diseases of bacterial canker caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) and gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea. Here, an endophytic bacterium XL17 isolated from a rape crown gall was screened out for its potent antagonistic activities against Psa and B. cinerea. Strain XL17 and its cell-free culture filtrate (CF) inhibited the growth of Psa and B. cinerea, Psa-associated leaf necrosis, and B. cinerea-associated kiwifruit necrosis. Electron microscopy showed that XL17 CF could damage the cell structures of Psa and B. cinerea. Genome-based taxonomy revealed that strain XL17 belongs to Pseudomonas bijieensis within the P. corrugata subgroup of the P. fluorescens species complex. Among the P. corrugata subgroup containing 31 genomospecies, the presence of the phl operon responsible for the biosynthesis of the phenolic polyketide 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) and the absence of the lipopeptide/quorum sensing island can serve as the genetic marker for the determination of a plant-protection life style. HPLC detected DAPG in extracts from XL17 CF. MALDI-TOF-MS analysis revealed that strain XL17 produced cyclic lipopeptides of the viscosin family and orfamide family. Together, phenotypic, genomic, and metabolic analyses identified that P. bijieensis XL17 producing DAPG and cyclic lipopeptides can be used to control bacterial canker and gray mold pathogens of kiwifruit
Characterizing and Decoding the Effects of Different Fermentation Levels on Key Aroma Substances of Congou Black Tea by Sensomics

The key aroma substances of black tea at different fermentation stages
(unfermented (WDY), underfermented (F1H), fully fermented (F4H), and
overfermented (F8H)) were characterized by the methodology of Sensomics.
Aroma extract dilution analysis was performed on volatile fractions
extracted by using solvent-assisted flavor evaporation and solid-phase
microextraction, yielding 93 odor-active areas. Internal standard
method plus stable isotope dilution analysis was used for quantitative
analysis. The omission experiment identified 23 aroma substances.
Further reduction and addition experiments revealed phenylacetaldehyde,
(E,E)-2,4-heptadienal, geraniol,
linalool, β-damascenone, 2-methylbutyraldehyde, dimethyl sulfide,
and isovaleraldehyde with odor activity values (OAV) > 100 as the
characteristic aroma components of F4H and also as the main contributors
to aroma differences between different fermentation degrees. The green
odor of (E,E)-2,4-heptadienal was
highlighted in WDY and F1H relative to that in F4H due to the lower
contribution of phenylacetaldehyde and β-damascenone
in the former two samples. Additionally, excessive OAV increase of
fatty aldehydes in F8H masked its similar floral and fruity aroma
